Tags: Check

Around the holidays, we have so many presents brought in to the store for gift wrapping that we have to use a gift check tag system. It works wonderfully but I wish our tags were as pretty as these printable coat check tags from Twig and Thistle! What an easy way to add a bit of formality to your winter wedding and a nice favor for guests!

Paper Soles

Taiwanese fashion designer Colin Lin has created a wearable and structurally sound shoe out of recycled newsprint. Each pair of shoes uses three to three and a half sheets of newspaper that are backed with a cotton lining and dipped in a waterproofing coating. Her company has sold over 4,000 pairs so far, contributing to the recycling effort one shoe at a time. I would love to put my feet in a paper pair!

Old World Jewelry

Tam Tran's jewelry is inspired by ancient civilizations and cultures. Each piece is hand forged in her New York City studio which lead to beautiful, organic marks in each piece. Her studio is run under the most environmentally sustainable processes possible and all metals are melted down for reuse to minimize waste. I love her aesthetic and use of history in the pieces! Her fall collection is available at our Holiday Pop Up boutique now through the end of December.

Black tie

Swedish designer Daniel Carlsten created this invitation for Acne Paper's Elegant issue, based off of the dress code for the event. Each invite was die cut and then folded by hand. I love the creativity and the way the paper is used on its own to convey a message!

Set it straight

Here's a great gift for any letterpress or printing enthusiasts out there: Erica Weiner has acquired a large collection of antique moveable iron type originally used on a handcrank Vandercook Press. She takes each piece and plates it in silver and strings it onto a chain, turning a small part of printing history into a lasting keepsake.

Holiday Botanicals

Aviva Stanoff's botanical print inspired collections are soft and lovely, just right for the holiday season. Every piece is handmade and the small irregularities lead to interest and character in the details. Her vases have always been some of my favorites and I'm excited that we have her goods at our pop up boutique in West Hollywood!

A thread for remembering

Amelia Lyon

Oh, Hello Friend has a great post up about the importance of a good business card with lots of pictoral examples of fantastic designs and ideas for cards. These are some of my favorites. The way a stitched card comes together always makes me feel like the person giving the card spent a lot of time and effort to make that one card and receiving it is that much more meaningful!

Paper towns

This stop motion animation of a book coming to life is fascinating to watch! It was created by Andersen M Studio for the New Zealand Book Council. Follow the link to see the pages cut and folded into a story about "Going West."

Soolip Holiday Pop-up Boutique

The holidays are coming and all of us at Soolip are excited! This year we have a Holiday Pop-up Shop in addition to our regular shop and it opens today!

It certainly is the thought that counts at Soolip’s special 2009 Holiday Pop-up Shop in West Hollywood. In its signature beauty-inspired style, the celebrated paper and lifestyle boutique on Melrose Avenue has curated a spirited collection of things delightfully uncommon and artfully made by hand from artisanal designers and creative craftswomen for the 2009 gift-giving season -- a season of thoughtful giving.

“For our holiday pop-up shop we set out to collect wonderful objects from some of the most fantastic designers and craftswomen today, all of whom work with their hands and hearts, creating things that we LOVE,” states Wanda Wen, Soolip’s founder and purveyor of all things beautiful.

Highlights of Soolip’s LOVES this season include Meg Cohen’s signature double fringe cashmere scarves, distressed and elegantly studded leather wallets from Tracey Tanner, intimate precious metal poetry jewelry from Jeanine Payer and the personalized felt creature stockings and whimsical tooth fairy kits from the queen of do-it-yourself felt, Kata Golda.

Like the holiday season itself, Soolip’s 2009 holiday pop-up shop is a fleeting joy. “It's only for six weeks,” adds Wen. “So run, don't walk.” A signature Soolip gift wrap boutique will also pop-up at The Peninsula Beverly Hills hotel in December 2009.

Soolip Holiday 2009 Pop-Up Shop Details
• Location: 8650 Melrose Ave., West Hollywood, CA 90069
• Duration: November 20th-December 31st, 2009
• Hours: Monday through Saturday 10am - 8pm, Sunday 12pm-6pm

Watering the plants

I just saw these watercolor paintings of terrariums by BestiaryInk over at Unruly Things. Sometimes a pretty print of a garden is just as good as having a real garden!

Stick 'em up

Rebecca Ward's installations made out of tape are breathtaking! I love the ones of Kate Spade's Tokyo flagship store featured over on Oh Joy! and couldn't help but browse through the rest of her portfolio. I'd love to try some mini store displays with all the beautiful colored masking tape that keeps popping up as well!

String them up

I'm always on the lookout for more creative ways to use up the paper scraps left over from all the gift wrapping that goes on in our store and these paper laterns from The Creative Place are simple and perfect for the holiday season!

Between the Folds

Between the Folds is a documentary following 10 artists and scientists who have become modern day "paperfolders." There's a free screening open to the public tonight in LA at the Frida Kahlo Theater at 6pm. Several other cities are also holding screenings and everyone can see it in December airing on PBS's Independent Lens series.

Washing up

Our friend Renee has been busy working on several sustainable projects, one of her most recent being Old School Brand Laundry Soap. It's fresh, natural and made without dyes or fillers in small batches right here in Los Angeles. Love the antique photo styling too, it makes me think of a time when women gathered together to do the laundry and share some gossip!

Holiday Knocking

I love this take on holiday door decor by Sweet Paul seen over at Design Crush. It's festive enough to make it feel like the season but at the same time it still holds a bit of nature and simplicity!

Artprize Paper Planes

Artist Rob Bliss prepared for over 6 months with his entry for ArtPrize which included folding over 100,000 paper airplanes. The airplanes were flown by 20 of the artists friends and family placed on top of various rooftops along Monroe Avenue in Grand Rapids, Michigan while othe participants hummed or played instruments along to Sigur Ros' "Olsen, Olsen." Here's the video from the event, it's breathtaking!

Mr. Boddington's

We're excited to be carrying the stationery of Mr. Boddington's Studio this holiday season! The cards are a delight and we can't get enough of the wonderful lined envelopes!

Paper ornaments

Lisa from The Red Thread featured a holiday tutorial on making ornaments out of paper scraps with your kids. It's perfect for using up some of our never ending paper bits and pieces and spending some quality family time together making memories!

Stamp Flags

Good Mail Day: A Primer for Making Eye-Popping Postal Art by Jennie and Carolee is a great collection of inspiration for crafting mail that you want to recieve just as much as you want to send it! To celebrate at a recent book signing party, the cupcakes were aptly decorated with stamp flags. We love anything associated with a good letter and we can already picture how adorable vintage stamp flags would be for adorning wedding favors too!

Union in design

Oh, So Beautiful Paper is always finding fantastic invitations and this week she showed off an amazing wedding invitation made out of transparent overlays! Two pieces of transparent paper were printed with each piece having half of the information for the event. When the pieces were overlayed, or joined, the full picture came together. It's a lovely idea of the symbolism of a wedding being carried over into the invitation. Very special and memorable! We love the fun colors and the bright envelope too!

Intial here, please

Scoutie Girl had a great post on using monograms in atypical ways and we love the custom made silver monogram necklaces she featured by Beadsss. Each one is made by hand from an ornate set of wax seals. We carry wax and seals in our shop and it's always a treat to use them and experience a piece of old fashioned letter writing. Seals add a tactile touch to a letter and let the recipient know that you put extra time and thought into their letter. It's nice to see them repurposed into a jewelry charm and what a great gift for a true letter lover!

Sail away

The leaves keep falling from the trees and everywhere we look, we find someone else that has found inspiration on the ground! Design Sponge recently featured these ships created and professionally photographed by Jeff Friesen in Nova Scotia. Each print is so calming and relaxing, just the right mood for season! You can see more of his work here.
